Our eleven plus (11+) tuition courses are taught by Kate, a fully qualified and experienced primary school teacher.
Children who are coached for nine months or more improve their scores at 11+ by up to 40% so the earlier you start the better.
Many children start tuition in Year 4 to get a head start and we strongly recommend that tuition is started no later than the beginning of Year 5

In Year 4 we work to reinforce the key skills in Maths and English and introduce children to Verbal Reasoning. Children gain an understanding of the standard expected of them and are encouraged to improve their skills leading up to our 11+ course in Year 5 and the exam itself.This will provide a stronger base to work from and boost their confidence for the 11 plus preparation.
Maths
The course is designed to improve core numeracy skills:
tables up to 12x12
efficient written methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
fractions
decimals
percentages
number patterns and relationships
multiplying by 10 and 100
rounding numbers to the nearest 10 or 100 and estimating the result of a calculation
Children will also need a good knowledge of the following topics before taking the exams. We will start introducing these topics and consolidate them in Year 5.
ratio and proportion
negative numbers
co-ordinates
2D and 3D shapes and their properties
angles and bearings
symmetry and transformations
area and perimeter
measurement -metric and imperial, time, reading scales
reading tables and charts
analysing data-mean, mode median and range
probability
Children also have plenty of practice in applying this knowledge to 11+ style questions appropriate to Year 4.
English
The course will concentrate on consolidating core skills.
developing vocabulary
grammar: understanding and identifying verbs, nouns adjectives etc.
punctuation: understanding and accurate use
literary devices: simile, metaphor, alliteration etc. identifying and using
different types of comprehension questions: closed, analytical, inferential and main idea
effective writing: structure, style, content, use of complex sentences
different types of writing: stories, newspaper reports etc.
Children will have the opportunity to answer 11+ style questions but appropriate to Year 4.
Verbal Reasoning
The course will introduce children to Verbal Reasoning.
building vocabulary:antonyms, synonyms,compound words
increasing logic and deduction skills
working systematically
looking for patterns in words and numbers
fun puzzles to develop reasoning skills
Children will tackle Verbal Reasoning questions in 11+ style but designed for Year 4 children
